Results of HHW & E-waste Collections

The Northeast Nebraska Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council along with several communities and the Lower Niobrara NRD hosted three Household Hazardous Waste collection events and three Electronic Waste recycling events recently. Citizens continually say that they appreciate the opportunity to attend these events which keep unacceptable materials out of the landfill while protecting the environment. These events were funded in part by a grant awarded to the RC&D from the Nebraska Environmental Trust.
Leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients are considered to be household hazardous waste (HHW). Over 4 tons of material was properly disposed of or recycled at these HHW events. This included 580# of pesticide, 6120# of paint, 111# of acids, 75 gallons of used oil, 23 gallons of antifreeze, 440# of batteries, 22# of mercury, 16 gallons of 2-4D, 5 gallons of Roundup, 289 florescent light bulbs, and 350# of recyclables. Red Willow County Household Hazardous Waste was the contractor.
Disabled Vets at Work RECYCLETRONICS of Sioux City, IA was selected as the contractor for the electronic waste recycling. Households were able to properly dispose of a large variety of electronic items including computers, TVs, printers, batteries, and more. 4.5 tons of these obsolete electrical items were properly recycled.
These events are held annually if possible and the RC&D Council moves them around their six-county service area to reach out to all citizens. For more information on these or other RC&D projects, call the office at 402-582-4866 or via email at northeastrcd@plvwtelco.net.
The RC&D Council continually strives to offering projects that citizens request and that will make life better for people in Antelope, Cedar, Dixon, Knox, Pierce, and Wayne counties.
