A Nature and Birding Walkabout is being planned for Saturday, April 23rd. This free event begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska’s headquarters building in Niobrara located at 2523 Woodbine Street. From there the group will carpool to the tribe’s East Pen Pasture.
The Walkabout will be led by expert birder Mark Brogie of Creighton. Several types of sites will be visited including prairie, woodlands and a pristine wetland. Tribal leaders will speak on the importance of birds to the Native population and also share information about their bison herd. Rebekah Jessen, Northern Prairie Lands Trust and Nebraska Game & Parks Commission will present information on the native habitats of wildlife in the area.
As the name indicates, some walking will be involved and the event will conclude by 10 a.m. This activity is another opportunity to become more informed about what exists in nature right “in our own backyard”. It is being sponsored by the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska and the Northeast Nebraska Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council.
Participation in the tour will be limited so pre-register early by calling the RC&D Office at 402-582-4866 or via email at northeastrcd@plvwtelco.net. Or contact Julia Sage at 402-857-3391 or jsage@poncatribe-ne.org for more information.
The RC&D Council looks forward to continuing their service to citizens through projects that will make life better for people in Antelope, Cedar, Dixon, Knox, Pierce, and Wayne counties.
