Northeast Nebraska Weed Management Receives Award

The Northeast Nebraska Weed Management Area (NNWMA) received a Missouri National Recreational River Partnership Award for 2016 from the National Park Service as a result of their work to control noxious weeds in and along the Missouri River. Brian Korman, Lead Biological Technician, presented the award at the NNWMA’s meeting on July 18th. He stated “With all the work this group does on the river you’re definitely deserving of this award.”
The NNWMA covers an eight county area of 4,610,212 acres on private, public, and tribal land whose northern boundary is the Missouri National Recreation River, a component of the National Park and Wild & Scenic Rivers System. Partners agree on the scope of the issues and attack them with a focused/targeted approach.
Priority noxious and invasive weed species found along the Missouri River include Purple Loosestrife, Salt cedar, Canada thistle and Phragmites.
The NNWMA group was formed in 1995 as a committee under the Northeast Nebraska Resource Conservation & Development Council (RC&D). The RC&D has continued to support them grant writing assistance, organizational efforts, and more.
