The Plainview Farmers Market ended its season on Wednesday, October 14th. According to Market Manager, Pearl Laycock, there were more vendors this year than there were the previous year. Also more people purchased goods this year. "Overall, it was a very successful season," Laycock said. This was the second year that the Farmers Market was offered in Plainview. Located in the parking lot of the RC&D Office, the Plainview Farmers Market provided a venue for local growers/producers to sell there goods. In addition, it made quality, locally grown foods available to the residents of Plainview. Plus it drew vendors and customers into the community. Forty people from across the state attended RC&D's Grant Writing Workshop at the Plainview Community Building on Tuesday, October 6th. City administrators, librarians, county economic development directors, ag societies, tribes, NRDs, village clerks, community volunteers, and the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission were all represented. Mike Holton, Plainview City Administrator welcomed the group to Plainview. MC, Janet Gill reviewed the day's agenda. Lyn Ziegenbein Executive Director Emerita of the Peter Kiewit Foundation spoke about their proposal guidelines and what they look for in a grant proposal. She also provided excellent tips on writing successful proposals in general. Matt Rezac, Director of Rural Community Partnerships for the Sherwood Foundation told the group about Sherwood's programs and services. Jim Gustafson, Director of Advancement and Gift Planning for the Nebraska Community Foundation spoke to the group about charitable giving in the U.S. and the services that the Community Foundation offers. Lyn, Matt, and Jim then held a panel discussion and answered specific questions from the audience. Following the panel discussion, the group went to Serendipity Restaurant for lunch. Following lunch, Kelly Gewecke Field Service Representative for the Nebraska Department of Economic Development provided information about the Departments programs and services.
To finish the day, Janet Gill, RC&D Council Treasurer and Dick Haskin, RC&D Financial Manager presented Grant Station's twelve steps to writing a winning proposal. |
