RC&D COUNCIL TOURS ORGANIC WORM FARM

9/29/2015

Picture
The Northeast Nebraska RC&D Council Toured the Broberg Organic Worm Farm south of Tilden on September 28th.  The worm farm produces worm castings that are used for organic fertilizer.  The castings produce excellent fertilizer because they do not burn the plants and they put microbes back into the soil.

Brobergs bag and sell the castings to area nurseries, green houses, gardens, and farms.  They also ship the castings to customers in several other states.

Following the tour, the RC&D Council held their monthly meeting at the Peace United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall in Tilden.

We also have items from other local entrepreneurs.  These locally made items make excellent gifts for birthdays and Christmas!

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE EVENT A SUCCESS

9/22/2015

The Northeast Nebraska Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council along with the communities of Laurel, Creighton and Elgin hosted Household Hazardous Waste events last week.  Eighty-eight households were served from approximately sixteen communities around the region.  People properly disposed of 780 pounds of pesticides, 3520 pounds of paint, 35 pounds of acids, 19 gallons of used oil, 9 gallons of antifreeze, 58 fluorescent light bulbs, 5 gallons of 2,4-D, 12 gallons of Roundup, 212 pounds of batteries, and there were 190 pounds of items recycled.

Red Willow County Household Hazardous Waste out of McCook, NE was the contractor for these events.  They in turn contract with the incinerator facility in Kimball, NE to destroy these items as approved by regulation.

Thanks go to all who participated and did the right things with these types of materials.   The benefits of proper disposal or recycling of HHW are many.  The events were funded in part by the participating communities, a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust, and by donations from citizens taking part in the program.

The RC&D continues to plan more events like these.  The board wants to provide services to citizens that are important for the environment and the education of people in Antelope, Cedar, Dixon, Knox, Madison, Pierce, and Wayne counties.
