The Northeast Nebraska Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council along with the communities of Ponca, Wayne and Santee are hosting Household Hazardous Waste collection events. Ponca’s will be Friday, September 9th at the City Office’s parking lot from 3 – 5 p.m. Wayne will hold theirs on Saturday, September 10th from 8 – 10 a.m. at the City’s transfer station. In Santee the collection will be Saturday, September 10th from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the Community Center.
These collection events are for households only, no businesses. Participants will be asked for a small fee to help with the cost of the project. This is also being funded in part by a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust.
Leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients are considered to be household hazardous waste (HHW). Products, such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides that contain potentially hazardous ingredients require special care when disposed of. Red Willow County Household Hazardous Waste out of McCook, Nebraska is the contractor and is well-versed in the proper landing and disposal of these materials. Some items brought in may be available for recycling or reuse to those who have need of them.
Specifically the items that will be accepted are: latex & oil-based paint, pesticides, herbicides, oil, Cleaning Chemicals, Fluorescent light bulbs, Yard & Garden Chemicals, Anti-Freeze, Car and household batteries, mercury and mercury-containing devices including compact fluorescent bulbs.
Contact the Northeast Nebraska RC&D Council at 402-582-4866 or via email at northeastrcd@plvwtelco.net for more information. The Council looks forward to continuing their service to citizens through projects that will make life better for people in Antelope, Cedar, Dixon, Knox, Pierce, and Wayne counties.
