KNOX COUNTY CEMETERY TOUR 2016

Picture
The Knox County Cemetery Tour was held on Saturday, August 13, 2016.  The tour began in Verdigre at 8:30am with Judy Carlson as guide.  Participants experienced the unique history of northern Knox County as well as learned about its Native American heritage.

Thirty-three people were registered.  The tour visited the following sites in northern Knox County:  the Mormon Monument, the Ponca Tribal Cemetery, the Interpretive Trail at the Ponca Agency, the Le Qui Court Cemetery in Niobrara, Hobu Creek Cemetery north of Lindy, the Santee Congregational Cemetery, the Howe Creek Cemetery northeast of Center, and the Verdigre Heritage Museum.

The Knox County Convention and Visitors Bureau provided a grant of $500 which was used to purchase newspaper ads and radio ads.  Casey's General Store donated 9 dozen doughnuts.  The feedback and participant evaluations were positive, and most stated they would like to see these types of tours continued in the future.

NORTHEAST NEBRASKA'S PASSPORT TO HERITAGE 2016

In an effort to promote area museums, the Heritage Museum Network began a Passport to Heritage program.  Twelve area museums participated providing passport sheets and placing a sticker over their listing for people who visited their museum.  Anyone who visited all the museums on the passport and received a sticker for each was entered into a drawing for a package of books (all by local authors) valued over $200.  Anyone who visited 10 or more museums and received a sticker for each was entered into a drawing for a commemorative Hawthorn sign (from the movie “Nebraska”) and a Legends and Lore of the Outlaw Trail book.  Finally, anyone who visited 6 or more museums and received a sticker for each was entered into a drawing for a $15 Walmart gift certificate.  All of the books and the Walmart gift certificate were donated.

The program ran from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.  Completed passport sheets had to be mailed in to RC&D prior to September 15th.

Jim Stout of Wakefield won the first prize - a package of books; Barb Stout of Wakefield won the second prize - Legends and Lore of the Outlaw Trail book and a Hawthorne sign; and Vickie DeJong of Pierce won the third prize - a $15 Wal-mart Gift Certificate.

St. James Marketplace

The women have been recognized nationwide for their success in putting St. James back on the Nebraska map, literally. For more information, go towww.stjamesmarketplace.com.

Boomerang Central
There are things you can learn from a boomerang. Like a well-thrown boomerang, what goes around, comes around. A friendly smile, kind word, or helpful deeds all have a way of returning to those who practice them.
  • Use the wind to your advantage. Don’t complain about it; put it to work for you.
  • If the wind is really strong, take a nap!
  • Watch your back! When throwing boomerangs – as with life – stay alert, and don’t get blind-sided. DUCK!
  • Science can explain and help us understand many things, but some things we just don’t know. Could those be magic?
  • As a thrown boomerang returns and drops at your feet, a task well done brings great satisfaction.
  • Boomerangs are coming back. Are you ready?
  • Watch for them as they come your way.
~ Your Northeast Nebraska RC&D Council Chair, Dennis Wacker
